Chapter 13

Blake didn’t want to come.

With the Christmas parade only ten days away, and the mysterious gifts weighing heavily on her mind, she would have much rather preferred a quiet night at home snuggling with her two cats, Oscar and Athena.

Why couldn’t whomever had sent those gifts not have given her something useful, like the frozen casseroles, or cookies she had been receiving all week long?

It also didn’t help that she knew that Lucas would be here.

Her guard was down at the moment, feeling a little fragile with the reminders of her father’s murder; she needed that protection firmly in place when she saw Lucas again.

After much back and forth she finally decided to put on a party dress and head out to Falcon Falls, knowing that if she didn’t either Bobby, Jesse, or Sawyer, would be calling to find out what was wrong. The last thing she wanted was for Bobby to miss the party, since she’d been looking forward to it for weeks. As for the boys… she couldn’t stand the thought of lying to them, since their friend was the reason she didn’t want to be here in the first place.

Blake never really bothered much with makeup. Cattle, horses and pups didn’t care what she looked like and most of the time she would be covered with mud after a farm call anyway. But procrastinating leaving her home, she spent more time than usual on her makeup. She even decided on a bright red lipstick she had bought, but had never worn.

When she finally arrived at Falcon Falls she was really impressed by how festive the barn looked. Perhaps a night of fun and dancing was exactly what she needed to ease her troubled mind. That thought quickly evaporated when she neared the barn and caught sight of Lucas standing at the entrance. He had on dark jeans and a crisp white shirt. A bolo tie hung around his neck, making desire bubble a little closer to the surface. His blue eyes looked almost sapphire from a distance, his skin bronze against the bright shirt. Her heart did a somersault before it landed in the pit of her stomach.

She drew in a sharp breath, faltering in her step. How was she going to forget what had happened between them, when she wanted it to happen again? If he hadn’t been a friend she wouldn’t have hesitated, she would’ve found the confidence to walk right up to him. But this was a friend, and if Blake was honest she didn’t really fear things not working out, she feared the way he made her feel.

Even standing next to him in the mayor’s office had confirmed that Lucas’s presence did something to her, no other man had done before. Her vocabulary seemed to disappear into thin air before she was deduced to a ball of nerves and needs.

Blake didn’t even like beards, but something about Lucas’s short beard made her itch to run her hand over his chiseled jaw over and over again.
